About shaftesburytkd

Learning TaeKwon-Do should be an enjoyable experience. It should be challenging, rewarding and lifelong.

The TaeKwon-Do instructor should stand in front of his/her class as an equal person, ready to impart knowledge in a disciplined manner.

The students should stand before the instructor ready to learn and apply themselves.

  • We are a Wirral TaeKwon-Do club based in Birkenhead, near Liverpool, we welcome people from all walks of life looking to better themselves through Tae Kwon Do.
  • We are members of the UK-ITF (Formally Imperial TKD Association), and directly affiliated to the ITF, all black belts and instructors have undertaken courses in first aid and undergone an instructors course.
  •  We practise Ch'ang Hon (Blue cottage) TaeKwon-Do as developed by General Choi Hong Hi and his team of pioneering instructors, its primary function as a military martial art means almost every technique in TaeKwon-Do can be applied effectively in self defence with devastating results.

The disciplined nature of learning TaeKwon-Do, intense training both physically and mentally, and a sense of achievement and pride means the art cultivates the mind whilst instilling confidence in the student. Success in TaeKwon-Do requires commitment, perseverance, indomitable spirit and self belief.

"Tae Kwon Do has played a large role in my life ever since I began, in 1996. Throughout my time as a TKD student, I have never needed it as a self defence, but it has offered me great confidence, perseverance and played a large part of my life.  I know that I have trained with, been taught by and have been graded by an excellent selection of instructors and I know I can say I have earned my grade. I aspire to continue my studies of TaeKwon-Do as far as possible, and teach it to the best of my ability."

Training hall

We teach at the shaftesbury youth club in Tranmere.

The large hall we train in can be fully heated, the floor is carpeted with a medium friction plastic which is absolutely ideal for Tae Kwon Do (your feet stick when you need them to, and slide when you want them to)

Equipment

There is an extensive amount of equipment used during training, this includes:

Large Kick pads for practising powerful techniques

Small focus pads for accurate punches and kicks

Foam batons to practise blocking

board holder/flip board combo constructed from steel: for breaking boards and practising jumping kicks up to ~10 foot off the floor.

Jigsaw style interlocking mats, the same used by the World TaeKwon-Do Federation in the olympics.

Gradings

To earn your next belt in TKD, you must be examined in a grading. Gradings test your knowledge practical ability in TKD. The highest possible title in Tae Kwon Do is grand master, to gain this honourable title you must pass many gradings and become a 9th degree black belt!

Gradings are held approximately once every 3 months in the Shaftesbury youth club.
